Italian Conversations
The smell of garlic and sweet basil is in the air as I approach the piazza. There is the low murmur of voices and laughter as I round the corner. The sun is setting on the Palazzo Comunale in Cortona, Tuscany, Italy. Italians are known for being sociable and if you are in a city or town that has a piazza, go there at sunset and just sit and relax. I make my way to a small sidewalk coffee shop. I am surrounded by history and architecture of medieval times. Tuscany is a region of Italy that is known for its picturesque countryside, attractive cities and rich art treasures.
Cortona is one of Italy's most enchanting cities, preferred for its culture, art, history and spirituality. Cortona's Etruscan power is witnessed by the still standing imposing parts of the city walls. During the day the piazzas are busy with tourists and small markets, but as the sunsets it becomes tranquil and slowly the men gather at the piazza. I do not see many women gather at the piazza, only woman tourists. According to the locals this is way of unwinding from the day’s work and chatting, smoking and relaxes with friends.
It does help to be unobtrusive and not to offend the community by taking photographs of everybody. Ask permission and you will find the Italians are more than happy to pose for a photo. This town is situated right on top of a hill and became famous in the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun”. It is steep and the streets wind up and down along small alleys and walkways. The view is magnificent from the top over the Tuscan valley.
Take time to explore the small gobble stone streets, sidewalk cafés and markets. This is not a city to be in a hurry. Explore the Museo dell’ Accademia Etrusca. This museum contains a number of Etruscan artifacts dating back to the 4th century BC. The Italians are friendly and willing to tell you about this beautiful city and its history.
Take a bus or hire a car and drive down into the valley to explore the valley below. I find Italy one of the most beautiful places to tour and take photographs. You should not be in a hurry to explore and take time drink Italian Chianti and eat pasta.
